Does a diet make sense?

Does a diet make sense?

Have you ever tried to lose weight with a diet? Did it work?

Most people manage to lose a few kilos quickly "without" any problems. At least as long as they stick to all the rules prescribed by the respective diet.

As soon as the goal is reached or the diet ends, you have the weight from before the diet back on your ribs within a very short time (usually even more than before the diet).

The problem with diets

The main problem with diets is that the weight lost does not consist purely of fat mass, but also includes muscle mass. Losing muscle mass reduces the total energy requirement. So after the diet, the body needs fewer calories than before the diet. To counteract this, it is therefore important to combine weight reduction with movement and sport.

Long-term solution

There are (unfortunately) no miracle cures for losing weight. Basically, the best thing would be to learn a change in behaviour that lasts a lifetime. It should be noted that weight reduction should not be achieved by starving. This carries the risk of intense hunger attacks, and for the body a slower weight reduction is also healthier. The goal is therefore to learn, through this change in behaviour, to "listen" to your body by stopping eating when you are full and only eating when you are hungry. You should also learn to eat slowly, since it takes some time after you start eating for the feeling of fullness to set in.

To optimise weight reduction, you can reduce fat mass and increase muscle mass through targeted training. This also counteracts the reduced energy turnover. Ideally, you should move for at least half an hour every day. Not only sport, but also everyday activities such as cleaning, gardening, climbing stairs, brisk walking or cycling help you reduce and regulate your weight.

5 tips for a balanced diet

  • Don't cut out too much. If the mental pressure becomes too great, you will give up on your good intentions too early. So the rule is: lose weight slowly but steadily.
  • When eating, concentrate only on the food and avoid side activities (television, newspaper, etc.).
  • NEVER go shopping on an empty stomach.
  • Make sure you get regular movement and sport.
  • Decide how much you want to eat before you start eating, and only put the prepared plate on the dining place.
