The Optimal Drink Temperature

The optimal drinking temperature is 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, drinks are most refreshing and increase the desire to drink.

Ice-cold drinks are generally only sipped in small amounts and usually don't lead to sufficient fluid intake. Larger amounts of ice-cold drinks can irritate the stomach and even trigger rapid gastric emptying and diarrhoea. Drinks that are too hot can also irritate the oesophagus and stomach. That's why they should be drunk slightly cooled.

In summer heat, drinks that are too hot can increase sweating, while cool (not ice-cold) drinks can slightly reduce sweat production.

For adequate fluid intake, it's best to combine different drinks, as this increases the desire to drink. Tap and mineral water – slightly chilled – are the ideal thirst quenchers. Fruit juice spritzers and unsweetened herbal and fruit teas also round off the drink selection perfectly.
