Get Moving!
A study at the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre shows the extreme effect exercise has on your metabolism
Scientists severely restricted young students' physical activity. With their diet unchanged, they walked just 1500 steps (about 1.2km) a day instead of the usual 10000 steps (about 8km).
The results after just two weeks are startling, and show more clearly than ever how important exercise is for your health:
- Body weight -1.2 kg from loss of muscle mass
- Belly fat +7% with total body fat unchanged (belly fat is considered especially concerning)
- Fat and sugar metabolism severely impaired
- Performance -7%.
Unlike our ancestors, who trudged for kilometres across the steppe every day, we now often sit all day in the car, at the computer or in front of the TV. But we're not genetically built for that.
So: get moving!
