The product has a lipolytic mode of action. Lipolysis is the catabolic process that breaks down the triglycerides stored in fat cells and subsequently leads to the release of free fatty acids and glycerol.

The most important polyphenol in Sinetrol® is naringin, which occurs in high amounts in grapefruits. It is a bitter substance known mainly as a natural ingredient of the grapefruit and is primarily responsible for its bitter taste. It can also be detected in pomelos. Studies suggest that it triggers the expression of genes, each of which improves the body's use of free fatty acids for energy production. Fatty acids are an important fuel for the liver, kidneys, heart and skeletal muscles. Lipolysis is the most important regulatory mechanism of the body's fat energy supply, as it controls the release of free fatty acids into the plasma.
